restorative niches
Restorative Niches (2013) is a series designed to bring authentic experiences from nature into an urban living space.
The functional objects of the three-piece series are felted wool carpets, instrumented with curated soundscapes and interactive electronic components: microprocessor controlled audio boards, pressure sensors and personal electronic devices.
Concerned with the concept of nature deficit disorder, the series references the developing body of scientific knowledge that correlates happiness and wellbeing with exposure to nature.
Referencing what comes between us and our raw encounters with nature, these functional objects are abstract assemblies that ask what the influence of technology and urbanism is on our access to the natural world.
